Snow is just around the corner

Snow has arrived in many parts of the country already, so it's time for the friendly reminder about shoveling snow.

Shoveling snow is strenuous exercise.  Lifting a heavy load on a snow shovel can cause a phenomenon known as the ”Valsalva Maneuver”.  Then phenomenon is caused by forcing your heart to beat against the pressure of the chest cavity and the contracted muscles in the arms, creating a “vapor lock” which can actually cause a heart attack, especially in people with a preexisting condition.

So remember, just as the rule applies in working out, do not hold your breath while lifting, and don’t hold your breath while shoveling snow.  Be sure to exhale when you lift.  More importantly, start taking care of your body now.  Get regular exercise – including cardio/aerobic training and weight training.

So let the snow flakes fall – if you have to shovel your own snow – protect yourself.
